This sucks.

Plain and simple truth is… starting from scratch when you know where you USED to be is super frustrating. So, yes – we’re starting over… and it’s not the end of the world. It doesn’t have to be for you, either.

It’s going to be tough.

I won’t sugar-coat it, FitFriends… starting over is going to be tough. It doesn’t have to defeat you, though! I’ve got some quick tips to keep you not just surviving, but THRIVING, during this go-’round –

– It’ll get better soon.

Yes, it sucks now – of course it does! Getting started all over again when you used to be so much more physically capable, strong, and even a little lighter on the scale… yeah, that’s gonna be a bitter pill to swallow. Don’t let that beat you, though! Just like when you first started out, the first few weeks will be a little rough as you develop the habits and turn this into a lifestyle again. After that, pff, smooth sailing. You’ll be back to your old habits in no time and it won’t feel like a chore to make the workouts happen

– Don’t dwell on the past.

I get it – I’m living it right now. You’re lamenting your fitness lost, getting upset at yourself, and wondering how you could’ve let this happen. Maybe you’re thinking about how much better you used to be at this. CUT THAT OUT! You’ve got to focus on the here and now – and right now, you’re doing shoulder presses with 10 lb dumbbells. Ok, fine – so that’s what we’re doing now. And soon, you’ll be upping that weight. Soon, your squat will be that much deeper. Give it time, look at where you’re at today, and look ahead to tomorrow.

– Acknowledge that you’re starting over.

Nothing can derail you faster than going too hard too soon. If you can’t acknowledge that you’re more or less starting over… you may be tempted to try to do what you were able to do before, at your peak. It’s important to understand where you’re at RIGHT NOW and not fall into that trap. It can be tough to do this, as it might feel a bit defeating. Again… don’t fall into that trap – it’s OK, really. Let’s just get back on it and make this a success 🙂
