Sweat means nothing.

Well, it doesn’t mean NOTHING, but we seem to think it has a much larger role than it really does. For SOME reason we think sweat is a clear indicator of fat burn. It’s time we had a talk about sweat, fat burn, and how it all REALLY works.

Have you had a good “sweat session” lately?

Let’s get right to the point here – there’s this idea out there that the more you sweat, the more fat you burn. People are FIERCELY defensive of this idea – that sweat is somehow an indicator of the efficacy of a workout.

This idea is dead wrong.

Let me ask you a question – if sweat is directly correlated to fat burn… why is there such an obesity issue in this country? Wouldn’t we all burn off fat and lose a bunch of weight in the heat of summer?  What about when the A/C in your car is broken – do you burn a pound driving to work? OH – you meant just in the context of a workout.

That’s dead wrong, too.

If sweat isn’t an indicator of fat burn when you’re sitting on your couch, why would that change in the context of a workout? The mechanisms in your body that burn fat don’t burn fat differently because you’re working out rather than sitting. As a matter of fact… it occurred to me…

Do people understand how sweat works?

With this idea that sweat is an indicator of fat burn, it seems to me to be the case that there’s a fundamental misunderstanding about how sweat works, and what it’s really for. The short version here is – it’s the body’s mechanism for cooling itself when our body temp is over 98.6 degrees. It’s really quite simple – sweat glands allow sweat to pass through the pores of the skin to the surface, where it then evaporates – thus cooling our body. We don’t burn calories during this process. That’s the basic, simple fact we need to know here. Beyond that… well… we take a deep dive into THAT on episode 79 of the So THIS Is Fitness podcast, which you can find below.
