A Race Director’s Almost-Worst Nightmare – Maine Coast Marathon 2017

Maine Coast Marathon course error

Sometimes life throws us a curveball…

This past weekend, it was in the form of an extra 1/2 mile on the Maine Coast Marathon course. That might not seem like a big deal to some – indeed, it’s probably only an extra 3 – 8 minutes added to most peoples’ day. For the exceptionally fast, though… that extra few minutes could be the difference between earning a coveted, and often elusive, BQ… or walking away heartbroken after months of effort seemingy wasted.

Needless to say, the pitchforks and torches are out.

People are raging on social media, railing against the race, and demanding their pound of flesh. In this situation, as often happens, not everyone knows what, exactly, happened… but they know they’re angry and upset. They know they want answers and a resolution. While nothing I can say today is going to award anyone a BQ… hopefully I can help give a little insight into things…

I Found Another Unicorn – NOW Foods

(Disclosure: This post was sponsored by FitFluential on behalf of NOW Foods –  All opinions are very much my own.)

In a word… wow.

“I just wanted to let you know… I am genuinely impressed by the level of honesty, integrity, and care in this company. You guys have something special here… This company has… soul.”

Those are pretty much the words that came out of my mouth on my way to the airport shuttle to come home… just 24 hours after arriving in Illinois for the NOW Foods “Influencer Immersion Event”.

I like to think I’m a pretty smart guy…

but sometimes I still manage to get caught off-guard… and by the time I was leaving the 2 day “Influencer Immersion Event” at NOW Foods headquarters… well… I’d say I was not only caught off-guard… but thoroughly blown away. No, not because of an impressive facility or big revenue numbers… something else. Something much more important and, frankly… very rare in corporate America… Something I found in Anytime Fitness that made me think I found a unicorn. Well… I found another unicorn.

Reebok Harmony Road Review

reebok harmony road review

(Disclosure: This post contains affiliate links – if you click through and purchase I may be compensated. I also received the shoes mentioned in order to review them. As always, all opinions are my own.)

I know next to nothing about running shoes.

I’m a pretty simple guy. Up until this review process came along, and the Reebok Harmony Road dropped into my lap… the extent of my shoe knowledge was “yeah it feels good”, “ooh, pretty”, and “yeah… feels like these need to retire”.  I had reviewed foods, supplements, and other types of “gear”… but not a shoe. And now, here I was… with the opportunity to do just that. “Here’s some shoes – go nuts!” – Who was I kidding? I’m WHOLLY unqualified for this.

So, naturally, I gave myself a crash course

Now that I’ve done that? Instant shoe-genius, obviously. Ok, not so much… BUT – I DO know a few things. I know why certain shoes work for me and others don’t… I know why I like what I like… and I get why the Reebok Harmony Road is a solid shoe. So… take a chance… venture forth with me… into my first ever running shoe review.

Grin Hola – The BEST Granola you’ll (probably) never eat.

Grin Hola review title image - founder jason

I’ve pretty much seen the full spectrum of “taste”.

I’ve been that “fat guy” that eats everything indiscriminately. Overly greasy, fatty, salty, sauced and more. You reach a certain point where eating and drinking like that… you sort of deaden your taste buds. Then those terrible foods begin to… “taste” good.  Now? I’m that “fit guy” who makes better choices. I avoid those things I used to eat. My taste buds came back to life. I can taste spices, nuance, subtlety, and the chef/creator’s intent. It’s why I drink my coffee black, why I love seltzer water, and why I say Grin Hola is not JUST granola.

I realize that might sound a bit… over the top…

But have YOU tried Grin Hola? It’s unlike any granola I’ve ever picked off the shelf in the supermarket. TOTALLY found it by accident… might never have known about it otherwise. And… sadly… YOU might never get to eat it.

Race Recap – Winter Warlock 2017

Winter Warlock 2017 bib

Sometimes…the important thing is to just GET OUT THERE…

It’s a new year…with a new set of goals…and a new reason to get out there. With such lofty goals as a 22 hour 100 miler and a sub-4 hour marathon… no training opportunity can be passed up. That said… when presented with the opportunity to run a half-marathon in an otherwise mostly race-barren month… who am I to say no? So, off I went to Plymouth for Winter Warlock 2017.

Let’s just say… it didn’t go exactly how I thought it would… in a number of ways. I’m still trying to decide how I feel about that.
