“There can be only one Highlander”
In a way, your fitness journey is kind of like the paradox of an unstoppable force meeting an immovable object. Only one can win – which is it gonna be?

Let’s talk philosophy for a second.
I’ve been thinking a lot about our fitness journey – more specifically, all the excuses, reasons, and other things people all too often claim are preventing them from reaching their goals. As a personal trainer and fitness coach, I get to know people in the context of both their goals and these things… and I hear a lot of commonalities. There are certainly some real, legitimate toughies people face, but by and large one truth reveals itself to be absolute time and time again –
If you want it bad enough you will find a way.
This applies to everything in life, not just our health and fitness endeavors. If there’s a movie, play, or show you want to see – you’ll rearrange your night or even your whole weekend to make it work (and you’ll find/justify the money to buy a ticket). If you want to have a party or a game night but the house is a mess – you’ll dedicate the time necessary to clean, organize, buy drinks and cook food. And of course, if your health and fitness goals are important enough to you, you’ll find the time necessary in your schedule to get those workouts in. You’ll find the time and money to handle meal prep, and really watch what you’re eating, making sure it’s all the right stuff and the right amount of it. You’ll pay what you need to pay for a gym membership, equipment, or even a coach/trainer.
So why, then, do so many people… not?
It’s important to consider the “Unstoppable Force Paradox”. In short, it poses the question – what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object? The reason this is a paradox is because it is self-contradictory. If an unstoppable force exists, then an immovable object cannot also exist (and vice versa). Now… think of it like this:
You are the unstoppable force, and everything preventing you from achieving your goals is the immovable object.
Obviously I’m not saying that those things getting in your way don’t actually exist. Little Timmy has football practice and games that he’s gotta get to. Grocery shopping and regular errands need to happen. You’ve gotta go to work, spend time with your family, and sleep. There’s a veritable laundry list of things in life that should be done and need to be done – I’m certainly not arguing that. The question is this –
Why does that have to completely stop you?
Those things need to, and should, happen – yes. But that doesn’t have to mean you can’t hit your fitness goals. Being an unstoppable force doesn’t mean blowing all that stuff away. Rather, let’s look at all that stuff and decide whether it has to be an immovable object… or if it can be moved, shuffled, made to work so you can reach your goals. If we can do it to make a movie or a party work… if we can do it to allow ourselves time to watch that tv show we really wanna see… why can’t we do it to get our workouts in and our meal prep handled?
You CAN have it all, FitFriends. If you are, truly, an unstoppable force.
You simply have to decide how bad you want it. How important are your fitness goals and aspirations? If it means enough to you, then you’re going to become that unstoppable force that finds a way to get it all done. If not, you’re going to allow all the things in life to become an immovable object preventing you from reaching your goals. Only one of the two can truly exist – either you can be unstoppable… or object can be immovable. “There can be only one Highlander” – is it you?
