Free and cheap isn’t always good.

Free and cheap fitness is always an attractive option, but there’s a major downside to it that most people don’t often consider.

What have you got to lose?

We have, somehow, been conditioned to look for the cheapest thing when we’re embarking on a fitness journey. The more stuff you’ll give us, the bigger the gym, and the lower the price tag – the more we like it. We judge a gym’s value on how much we get and how little we can pay. And if you want to “lock us in” to a contract? Forget it. And we find a gym that fits the bill and we think we’re up and running!

Really, we’ve set ourselves up for failure.

What we don’t consider is that by paying next to nothing (or actually nothing) and having no sort of commitment to speak of… there’s nothing on the line. We can give up at any time with no consequence. Except the consequence that we didn’t get where we wanted to be. And frankly – we’re already used to living in that place, so it’s not much of a blow anyway.

The carrot and the stick.

Sometimes we need positive reinforcement, but honestly – sometimes we need the negative, too. There needs to be consequences for “bad” behavior or failure, just like there needs to be reward for exceptionally “good” behavior and success. When you pay next to nothing and can quit any time… there’s effectively no consequence. So you can give up before you get the carrot and there’s no stick to keep you in line until you GET the carrot. We think we’re doing ourselves a favor, but really we’re just setting ourselves up for failure and an easy exit.

Join me for a longer discussion of everything we’re cheating ourselves out of when we go with the free, cheap, and no commitment fitness options in episode 92 of the podcast.
